Fra 1944 rammes mange jyske byer af terroraktioner udført af medlemmer af Schalburgkorpset, den berygtede Petergruppen. Schalburgtagen, der var hævnaktioner for modstandsbevægelsens sabotage, var rettet imod både bygninger og liv, de såkaldte "clearingmord" på kendte og vellidte danskere. I Aalborg bliver lægen Rikard Raetzel således dræbt af Petergruppen d. 7. oktober 1944 på hjørnet af Rosenlundsgade og Ågade, og Aalborg Rutebilstation og forlystelsesstedet Kilden sprænges i luften.
