I 1888 ledte den norske polarforsker Fridjof Nansen på ski den første ekspedition over den grønlandske indlandsis. Den 6-mand store ekspedition kom efter store vanskeligheder i land på østkysten og gik mod vest 500 km tværs over Grønland mellem Umivik og Ameralik Fjord ved Nuuk. Gåturen tog 40 dage.
